What % of Admitted Students Submit Test Scores?

Here's a crucial data point as you consider test-optional schools: Boston University announced that 64% of admitted students in the 2026-26 admissions cycle submitted an SAT or ACT test score.

In that same communication, BU shared that 61% of all admitted students applied via Early Decision (ED). Of those, 39% submitted test scores.

Let's look under the hood to see what this really means:

  • If you are considering a selective school like BU (admission rate: 14%), you can increase your admission chances significantly by submitting a competitive test score.

  • If 39% of admitted students via ED submitted test scores, then students who choose not to submit test scores should definitely pursue early admissions programs for selective schools.

So what score do you need to be considered competitive for a school like BU? According to Niche, admitted students to BU earned an SAT score in the 1420-1530 range or an ACT score in the 32-34 range.

These scores are very competitive. So is admissions at BU.

Bottom line? Don't treat the SAT or ACT as optional. Take the tests and work to improve your score. If you don't get a competitive score, apply via Early Decision. If you get a competitive score, submit it.

Just don't walk away from the SAT or ACT. Test scores matter and are mattering more and more.
